Kham River Restoration Work

The Major stretch of the Kham River is flowing within the limits of Cantonment area. The said stretch of the River was converted in Nallah due to dumping of garbage, chemical waste from industries etc.
Now, under smart city project the work of eco restoration and beautification of Kham River by way of plantation of saplings, cleaning of the Kham River basin, stone pitching, chainlink fencing, colouring and painting of the compound wall etc has carried out.

Challenges Identified:

• The Whole Kham River was converted into Nallah due to dumping of garbage, industrial waste effluents etc.
• Large amount of solid debris were accumulated upstream and below the bridge.
• Large amount of floating waste had accumulated near to bridge and along the bank.
  Evolving Action Plan:
• Cleaning activities on both the banks of the river.
• Stone pitching of downstream stretch of both banks of Kham River.
• Development of Entry point and huts of Eco-Park
• P&F of metal mesh to avoid solid waste dumping /throwing into the river from bridge.
• Plantation of selective species of plants along both banks of the Kham River
• Eco park Development
• The approach roads on both banks of Kham River was covered by vegetation making it unapproachable to vehicles and humans for implementation work.

Utilization of Resources, Financial Management:

• Restoration work carried out under Smarty City Project by AMC and Varroc Pvt. Ltd.
• No burden on Cantt. of Finance.

Impact after Execution:

• River has restored to its original state
• Improvement in Habitats.
• Reduction in Water Pollution.
• Eco Park established.
• Increase in phytoplankton’s and zooplanktons (Plant & Animal species)
• Improvement in Aquatic ecology of the Kham River
• Bad Odour problem resolved.
