CB Delhi: Rejuvenation of Water Pond at Village Jharera, Delhi Cantonment

Under the aegis of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, the Govt. of India is giving impetus to Jal Sanchay and ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ for water conservation is a time bound mission. Jal Shakti Abhiyan involves key issues like Water Conservation, Rain Water harvesting, Renovation of traditional water bodies, Reuse and recharge structure and Intensive afforestation.
Water body at Village Jharera exists since last 7-8 decades. Water Pond at Village Jharera is the only pond located on the land vested with Defence Estates department and it was decided to rejuvenate water pond at Village Jharera to address larger environmental concerns. STATUS OF PONDS PRE-REJUVENATION Water Pond at Village Jharera was found in poor physical condition. Both the quantity and quality of water was found to be deteriorated. The water body at Village Jharera has become a dump yard and sewerage disposal pit, sewerage lines from surrounding settlements directly opening into it. The pond was also place for cattle menace.
In pursuit to ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’, Cantt Board Delhi decided rejuvenation of existing water body at Village Jharera aesthetically & to develop its surroundings for recreational purposes. The whole hearted efforts of Cantt Board Delhi lead to the aesthetic development/rejuvenation of Jharera pond.
Impact
The aesthetic development/rejuvenation of water pond has not only addressed the environmental concerns but recreational development of area has benefited over 5000 population of the village too. People are now sensitized & understand importance of water conservation.
